Code of Conduct

We do not believe in censoring opinions or ideas. Open discussions about relevant issues are encouraged. We expect disagreement and encourage it if it can benefit the ANES or related scientific research. In all cases, on-line discussion must remain respectful of others. In what follows, we describe our code of conduct. Generally speaking, these rules simply require respect and good manners.

Profanity has no place on these boards. The boards are equipped with censoring software and may not permit messages containing inappropriate language to be posted. Profanity includes attempts to bypass the built in filter that these boards contain to avoid such words.

ANES also reserves the right to prohibit postings that defame or insult anyone. Any harassing notes or postings that might be construed as stalking will be deleted. We also reserve the right to remove notes that are off the subject or not in English.

Communicating in a chat room or on message boards is different from face-to-face communication. Only the words are seen, not your facial expressions or tone of voice. Please pay careful attention to how you use your words.

Remember that the words you use in a burst of passion or indignant anger will be there for you and everyone else to see, sometimes long after those intense feelings have passed. This comment is not meant to discourage spontaneity, but just a friendly reminder of the long-term existence and effects of what you post.

You may, from time to time, find yourself in disagreement with someone else’s opinion. At times like these, please keep in mind it’s safer and more polite to take issue with the comments rather than the person.

No solicitations or advertisements are allowed. This includes advertisements for books that you have written or tuition-based seminars in which you participate.

These boards are not for exchanging personal messages with friends. If the message is not intended for everyone, it does not belong on the boards.

You are free to post a link to your website on our discussion boards, provided that a) you are not offering a commercial service or for profit venture, and b) you do not repeatedly and excessively post the same link over and over again on the forums within our site.

Statements or postings that violate the above terms will be prohibited. While we may attempt to notify you if we move or delete a post, we are under no obligation to do so.

In sum, by using the ANES Online Commons, you agree that you will not post any of the following materials:

  • Material that contains vulgar, obscene, or indecent language or images.
  • Any communication that contains spam (multiple copies in one area or the same communication in multiple areas).
  • Material that defames, abuses, or threatens others.
  • Statements that are bigoted, hateful, or racially offensive.
  • Material that advocates illegal activity or discusses illegal activities with the intent to commit them.
  • Unauthorized copyrighted material.
  • Advertising or any form of commercial solicitation.
  • Material that impedes or otherwise prohibits communication; disrupts the discussion including, repeatedly posting off-topic messages in a topical message board.

Posts to the Online Commons are moderated by ANES staff, who will accept or reject posts as needed based on this Code of Conduct.

The staff and Principal Investigators may revise the organization or policies of the Online Commons to reflect evolving user demand and incorporate ongoing technical advances.

ANES staff have been instructed not to respond to questions on the message board regarding edits, deletions, movement of posts, or any other moderator activity on this message board.

Any harassment of the moderators on this message board will not be tolerated, and will be considered a violation of the Code of Conduct and treated accordingly.

By joining the conversations on the Online Commons, you agree to abide by this Code of Conduct.
